“But now we are discharged from the Law and have terminated all intercourse with it, having died to what once restrained and held us captive. So now we serve not under [obedience to] the old code of written regulations, but [under obedience to the promptings] of the Spirit in newness [of life].” Romans 7:6 [AMP].
In the last lesson we discovered that in the new covenant, instituted by the finished work of Christ, we are to live our lives by the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Today I want to lay emphasis on the phrase “under obedience to the promptings] of the Spirit” from the verse of scripture above.
It is true that the Holy Spirit will always prompt us. In John 16:13, Jesus assured us that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth, that He (The Holy Spirit) would speak whatever He hears from Jesus; however despite the fact that the Holy Spirit is speaking, we still have to decide to obey. You see, obedience is a choice and a lot depends on it, your well-being is one of them.
“If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land.” Isaiah 1:19.
Sometimes people wave aside portions of scripture like the one above as part of the law. Not so; it is actually the Old Testament (The prophets, to be exact) and it is still relevant to us as New Covenant believers in Jesus Christ. The thing is, we must process everything in The Bible through the finished work of Christ (His death & resurrection). If we are willing and obedient to the promptings of the Spirit, we will eat the good of the land; do you know why? It’s because the Holy Spirit is God’s Spirit and He prompts you according to God’s mind for you. Why would you want to try figuring out things the hard way when you can just know the ways of the One with the blueprint? My thoughts exactly.
Under the new covenant, we aren’t supposed to strive to keep a written code of regulations, we are simply supposed to obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit, so that it can be well with us and so that we can successfully carry out the mission God, our Father, has for us in this earth realm. There is another exciting and valid dimension of being led by the Spirit though.
Paul said “The true children of God are those who let God’s Spirit lead them” (Romans 8:14 NCV). In the next lesson, we’ll discover this whole other dimension in the term “Led by The Spirit.”
