“My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh” Proverbs 4:20-22.
GOD’s Word to us is not a suggestion or just an elder’s advice, they are instructions and commands for life. GOD told the Israelites that life or death was theirs to choose but He commanded them to choose life. We must be careful not to cast aside GOD’s Word especially the parts that we think aren’t nice or in tune with the contemporary society; GOD’s Word is life to us, it is not GOD’s suggestions that are given to conveniently fit our lives however we choose to live them.
We must agree with GOD’s Word so that we can receive the health and life contained in it. The father of the king said “Give attention” and “Incline your ear” in describing how we should consume GOD’s Word. Sure it seemed like the king was speaking to his son but the gravity of the words in those verses have got to be GOD’s Word. The king would never have assumed that only his own words can give life and health to all people. I just felt I should get that out of the way.
The phrases “Give attention” and “Incline your ear” show us that consuming GOD’s Word is to be a continual activity. It’s not a once-in-a-week event or a 2-minute religious exercise one must conduct every morning. It’s something we must do as often as we can; it’s something we must give time to. Why is it so important? It’s important because GOD wants us to know Him.
“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent” John 17:3.
Eternal Life is knowing GOD and His Son, Jesus Christ. This is what GOD wants for us. His ultimate goal for us is not the paying of bills or gaining of employment per se, but it is knowing Him and His Son; it is having communion with Him and producing that Eternal Life wherever we have been planted to create as He creates. That’s why it’s essential to pay attention to His Word and incline our ears to it, because it is in His Word that we know Him. When we keep His Word in the midst of our hearts, we’ll begin to know what pleases Him. We’ll begin to hate what He hates and love what He loves; we will know his whole counsel.
“He made know His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel” Psalms 103:7.
I believe very strongly that Moses had GOD’s Word in the midst of his heart. The truth is, if you seek GOD’s face, He will reveal His face to you. He revealed Himself to Moses; He made His ways known to Moses. The implication of that is Moses knew what God loved, hated and what He wanted (what pleased Him); he knew the ways of GOD.
Believe it or not, GOD wants each and every one of us to know His ways. I believe God, The Father is more interested in making His ways known to us than He is His acts. But know that when God makes His ways known to you, His acts will inevitably be seen.
So stick with GOD’s Word today. Give GOD’s Word the same attention (and more) as you would give a doctor or a financial analyst or the media in general. Agree with GOD’s Word and get to know Him and Jesus Christ. That is Eternal Life.
