“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9.
A gift is something that is given. It is not earned nor is it bought. It is something that is freely given at the discretion of the giver. The receiver doesn’t particularly determine how the giver distributes the gift.
“For by grace you have been saved.” Among the Greek root words of Grace in that verse of scripture are ‘Favour’ and ‘Gift.’ We are saved by the favour of God. His gift to us is His Eternal Life; and it is inly through faith we can receive it. God’s Eternal Life frees us from the power of sin and death and it is a gift. You couldn’t afford it. The richest man in the world can’t buy it; it is given by God only through faith in Christ Jesus.
The truth is no one could give themselves into Eternal Life. A strict moral code (by itself) can’t get you saved. “For by GRACE you have been saved through faith…” It is through faith, “not of works.” Any works done with the aim of receiving salvation are dead works. They have no life in them. Those works could never save anyone because God would not have anyone take a boast. “It is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
The only boast should be in Christ. This messiah and Lord of all, who went to the crosd to suffer and die as a substitute for us.
“Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.” Isaiah 53:4.
Jesus took upon Himself all that we deserved as a consequence for sin. Romans 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The word ‘wages’ literally means means ‘a soldier’s pay.’ In other words it is salary. The salary of sin is death. All mankind was required to receive that salary whether we like it or not. But because of God’s love, Jesus went to the cross and paid sin’s salary on your behalf and gave us access to the gift of God, Eternal Life.
So now ladies and gentlemen, if you receive the Lord Jesus Christ, instead of receiving death because of sin, you will receive Eternal Life because of grace. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves…” The only part you had to play was repenting and receiving the gift. The main work was done by God in Christ Jesus. Salvation only comes by grace through faith in the finished work of Christ.
On the cross, He paid the price for you; in the grave He defeated death; in His resurrection, He brought you Eternal Life and made you righteous. Won’t you quit trying to work it out by yourself and receive this gift? Won’t you rid yourself of the boast in your efforts and receive salvation by grace? It is only in Christ that you can receive this gift of life, so waste no time, receive Him today.
